Summer's first SOTW comes from Bloomington residents Madeline and Justin, AKA Nice Try. At under ten minutes long, their debut acts as a looking glass into the adolescent female psyche. It’s as if frontwoman Madeline Ava got right inside my mind, extracted my stubborn, selfish, frustrating and gruesomely honest thoughts and turned them into six tracks of solid indie pop-punk. With hints of Best Coast, Hop Along and Frankie Cosmos throughout, Ava’s sugar sweet vocals and literal lyrics are both empowering and endearing.
