This swelling and gently urgent single from Chicago's Ester is more produced than your run of the mill lo-fi, but manages to directly address the listener in the same intimate and direct way.
Songwriter Anna Holmquist said, "I wrote 'John's Car' for a songwriting club where the prompt was "car," about the experience of joining a cult midway through college, and the man who brought me into it."
The song's simple melody is enriched with neighbour harmonies and subtly creeping synths and band. It's catchy, cool and just a nice amount of creepy.
Anna pieced together the full-band realisation of their music in 2017, resulting in Ester. Turn Around, the first full-band LP, is a meditation both on major life changes and looking back at the past to understand your growth. Most of the tracks came out of a 6-month songwriting period around the beginning of Holmquist’s Saturn Return, which is seen as the time of reaching full adulthood, and being faced, perhaps for the first time, with adult challenges and responsibilities.
