Axes blend punk and math rock into some of the most exciting music on the heavier side of the instrumental scene. In 'Junior' the band bring riff after riff in a non-stop assault. Their music has that tricksy quality that puts a smile on your face, making the listener feel like they're in on a joke. As with all their music, the song twists and turns, or flip back on itself; you're along with Axes for the ride but your brain is barely able to keep up.
There's a calypso feel to some of the sections in 'Junior', that make the moments of screeching refrain or overdriven breaks all the more awesome in contrast. The interplay between the drums, bass and skipping guitars is incredible to behold and in this simple, playful music video you get the sense that Axes are all about the pure joy of making music. There are influences from the past four decades of guitar-music flowing through this, their first single from their second album, Glory. If we base our assumptions on 'Junior', Glory looks set to be a genre-hopping, mood-swinging conglomeration of ideas.
